Water and wastewater treatment is the process of removing contaminants from wastewater, and includes physical, chemical, and biological removal processes. This course introduces the problem-solving concepts and tools commonly used in environmental engineering, present the fundamental operations and processes that are used, with a focus on water and wastewater treatment processes, and instills knowledge essential for basic understanding of environmental systems. The topics covered include an introduction to environmental engineering and environmental systems, materials and energy balances, reactors, hydraulic characteristics, and flow regimes, water use trends and projections, water chemistry concepts, water constituents and quality standards, and a review of physical, chemical, and biological treatment options. This course consists of maintenance and operational procedures of all components of water and wastewater systems. It prepares students for more advanced water and wastewater courses and training. In addition to providing students valuable experience, this course prepares students for T-1, W-1, C-1, and S-1 New Jersey licensing tests.
