This 90 hour lecture course provides the first step to preparing students for a career as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician. The program begins with the healthcare delivery system, collection of materials and equipment, venipuncture and capillary techniques, and medical, legal and ethical implications of blood collection. Students will complete 30 venipuncture and 10 capillary sticks before the completion of the course to be eligible to sit for the National Certification Exam given by NHA.
Upon successful completion of the Phlebotomy I and instructor recommendation, students may register for Phlebotomy II Externship. Students will complete 80 hours at a local healthcare facility under direct supervision. Schedules will vary and will be assigned by the externship coordinator. Students must adhere to their schedule and complete the assigned hours. Note: Students have 6 months after Phlebotomy I to complete the externship.
