Act Summer Enrichment Program

Course 1: STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, Math)

Description:

Through purposeful and engaging well-rounded educational experiences as well as valuing the diversity of all students, this course aims to educate and empower 21st century students in order to prepare them for a successful college and career path. Remedial education activities will provide additional assistance to allow students to improve their core academic achievement in mathematics and language skills. Students will engage in creative pursuits in coding, Lego, robotics, cooperative and leadership activities, social emotional learning, mind and body health, financial literacy, and computational technology. Students will engage in visual and dramatic arts, crafts, dance, recreation and cultural activities. Students will be amazed and delighted as they explore nature, electricity, floating and sinking science and engineering challenges. Each easy-to-follow experiment will help to develop students’ creativity and curiosity.

Course 2: Keeping Up with Adulthood

Description:

This course presents skills needed to successfully function in the workplace and the community. Career Internship Experiences will enhance the students’ skills for employment and everyday activities of daily living with hands on experiences. These include, but are not limited to, hygiene and personal care, kitchen and cooking essentials, as well as the skills required for the upkeep and cleanliness of their environments, safety in the workplace, as well as the skills required for the different workplace environments. Students will gain a better understanding of their own personal accountability, practice implementing their own effectively skillset, and practice self-advocacy skills needed for success. Students learn to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses and incorporate their own skills to enable them to appropriately seek prospective placements in the employment realm. For Gloucester students, they will have the opportunity to continue their internship experiences with the Together Café.

Course 3: Creative Writing

Students will be exposed to different genres of writing, such as short story and poetry. They will practice and perfect their own style and voice through writing, and refining their work and the work of other students. Through their writing students will improve their structure, their use of

vocabulary, and learn how to express their own thoughts and ideas in a meaningful and entertaining format for their audience. Students will pick their best finished pieces from each genre for the summer newsletter.

Course 4: ACTing and Arts Enrichment Program

Description:

This enrichment program would allow students to design their own play script related to employment experiences and put on a show for friends, family, and staff. Students will use art materials to create the props for their play. This gives students the opportunity to build self-confidence and be proud of something they’ve created. The students could go as far as incorporating costumes, songs, and dance into their production.
