The Introduction to Wastewater Treatment & Wastewater Collections Systems Class involves a series of processes designed to remove contaminants from water through physical, chemical, and biological methods. This course serves as an introduction to the essential problem-solving approaches and tools commonly employed in environmental engineering, with a strong emphasis on wastewater and collections systems. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of environmental systems by exploring key topics such as wastewater sources and characteristics, treatment methods, sludge handling, ammonia and phosphorus removal, stabilization lagoons, disinfection, wastewater analysis, gravity systems, pumping stations, force mains, along with local and state regulations.

The curriculum also delves into fundamental water chemistry, biology, and electricity. It is also important that this class review the concepts, and the range of constituents that affect water quality. Students will review relevant wastewater standards and examine the full spectrum of treatment options—spanning physical, chemical, and biological methods. Additionally, the course covers the maintenance and operational procedures necessary to manage all components of wastewater and collection systems effectively, while also covering the all-important permit discharge regulations necessary and required daily.

By completing this course, students will not only build valuable classroom experience but also prepare themselves for more advanced coursework and specialized training in the field.
